Shared User Can’t Add Devices or Change Home Settings

Last updated: August 25, 2026

This is expected on a shared login. Shared users control thermostats from their own app. They cannot run owner-only Home management. On some screens those taps fail silently or show an error.

What a shared user cannot do

  • Pair, add, or remove thermostats

  • Invite other people or remove other shared users

  • Create or delete a Home, or edit Home name, electricity rate, and address

  • Set up, change, or delete geofencing for the Home (they can still be included in the household geofence if the owner turns that on — they enable location on their own phone)

  • Receive Smart Alerts (temperature, humidity, filter, geofencing pushes). Only the primary account holder gets those

  • On many Homes, create or save a new schedule, or rename/delete saved schedules. They can still apply a schedule the owner already saved. Ask the owner to build or update the schedule, then apply it

What still works

Adjust temperature and mode, use existing schedules, use Home / Away / Vacation shortcuts, and view energy or Insights where that product shows them.

If they need owner powers

Sharing is not an ownership transfer. To make someone the new primary user, the current owner removes the thermostat, then the new owner pairs it. For a used unit the previous owner cannot reach, see Ownership Transfer for a Used Thermostat.

If you still cannot resolve it, email support@getmysa.com if a shared user cannot even change temperature after they accepted the invite.
