When You Only Have 2 Wires

If you only find a 2-wire cable (plus ground) in your thermostat's electrical box, Mysa for Baseboards cannot be installed as-is. Here's why, and what to do next.

Why 2 wires isn't enough

Mysa needs dedicated power to run its display and Wi-Fi. With two wire bundles (4+ wires), power flows in from your breaker (line) and out to your heater (load), letting Mysa power itself while controlling the heater. A 2-wire setup typically only breaks the circuit and can't provide that.

Before assuming you only have 2 wires

This is genuinely rare. Remove your old thermostat and check inside the gang box carefully — extra capped or tucked-away wires are common. Most setups have 4–6 wires total once you look. See Wiring Requirements.

If you truly only have 2 wires, your options are:

  1. Consult an electrician — they can assess whether additional wiring can be run to the thermostat location.

  2. Consider Mysa for Central HVAC — if your system uses relays, this model with a C-wire adapter might work.

  3. Look for a dedicated line-voltage thermostat rated for your heater's amperage (non-smart).
