Schedules, Holds, and Shortcuts: A Complete Guide
Schedules, Holds, and Shortcuts: A Complete Guide
Your Mysa Smart Thermostat is always in one of two states: following a schedule or in a hold. This article explains what each temperature control feature does and when to use it.
Schedules
Your schedule is your foundation. It automatically adjusts temperature and mode based on time and day, running continuously unless you override it. Set it once and your thermostat follows it every week.
Scheduling is the #1 way to save money with your Mysa—most users start here and add holds or shortcuts as needed.
Tip If you don't want a schedule, your thermostat will simply hold whatever temperature you set. But without a schedule, there's no baseline to return to. If you want a default temperature that your thermostat returns to automatically, create a schedule with that temperature repeated throughout the day.
Holds
A hold keeps your thermostat at the temperature and/or mode instead of following schedule commands. Your thermostat is always either following your schedule or in a hold—there's no in-between.
Types of holds:
- Hold until next schedule change — Temperature stays until your next scheduled event, then the schedule resumes automatically. This is the default when you adjust the temperature directly on the thermostat or through a smart home device (Alexa, Google Home, etc.).
- Hold until a specific date/time — Temperature stays until your chosen end time, then the schedule resumes.
- Hold indefinitely — Temperature stays at the held temperature unless something overrides the hold indefinitely behavior: you adjust it in the app, someone changes it on the thermostat, or a smart home device sends a new command. Any of these will put the thermostat back into "hold until next schedule change." If you never want the schedule to take over, delete the schedule entirely.
How to switch between schedule and hold:
From the device control screen, look at the button under the temperature control. When following a schedule, it shows "Follow Schedule"—tap it to set a hold instead. When a hold is active, it displays "Holding until [time/date]"—tap it and select "Follow Schedule" to resume your normal schedule.
Note "Off" is just another mode, like Heat or Cool. It doesn't turn off your thermostat or disable your schedule—your thermostat still follows the schedule, it just won't heat or cool. If your schedule includes Off mode at certain times, the thermostat will switch to Off during those events.
Shortcuts
A shortcut applies your desired thermostat setpoint, mode, and fan speed AND a hold behavior all at once. Three shortcuts are available: Home, Away, and Vacation.
Shortcut hold options:
When you set up a shortcut, you choose how long its temperature holds:
- Hold until next schedule change — Resumes schedule at the next scheduled event.
- Hold indefinitely — Stays until something changes it (app, thermostat, or smart home device), which reverts to "hold until next schedule change."
- Ask me when applied — Each time the shortcut triggers, you choose: hold until next schedule change, hold indefinitely, or hold until a specific time or day.
Geofencing:
Geofencing automatically triggers a shortcut when you leave or arrive home based on your phone's location. It's an optional way to automate your shortcuts.
If geofencing triggers a shortcut, that shortcut overrides whatever hold you currently have active.
How They Work Together
At any moment, your thermostat is either following a schedule or in a hold. That's it.
- Schedule — The default behavior your thermostat returns to.
- Hold — Any deviation from the schedule, however you trigger it.
- Shortcut — A quick way to apply a hold with preset temperature, mode, and fan speed.
- Geofencing — Automatically triggers shortcuts based on your location.
Common Use Cases
Predictable daily routine
Set up a schedule and let it run. Your thermostat adjusts automatically based on when you typically wake up, leave, return, and sleep.
You leave early, come home late, or your day is unpredictable
Use your schedule as a baseline, and set your Away shortcut to "hold until next schedule change." When you leave earlier than usual, trigger the Away shortcut—it holds until your schedule's next event brings things back to normal. Works great for weekends when you're normally home but head out for the day.
Working from home today
Set your Home shortcut to "hold until next schedule change." When your schedule would normally lower the temperature because you'd be at work, tap the Home shortcut to stay comfortable. Your evening schedule kicks in as usual.
Going on vacation
Use the Vacation shortcut with "hold until a specific date/time" set to your return date. Your thermostat holds a lower temperature the entire time, then automatically resumes your schedule when you get back.
Guests staying for a week
Set a manual hold until a specific date. Choose the temperature they'll be comfortable with, and your schedule resumes when they leave.
Unpredictable comings and goings
Enable geofencing with your Home and Away shortcuts. Your thermostat adjusts automatically based on your phone's location—no need to think about it.
