Troubleshooting Auto Mode: Why Isn’t My System Heating or Cooling?Updated 24 minutes ago

If you're using Auto Mode on your Mysa thermostat and notice that heating or cooling isn’t turning on as expected, this guide will walk you through common reasons and how to check each one.

1. Check That Auto Mode Is Fully Enabled

Auto Mode must be:

  • Enabled in the app

  • Paired to your system

  • Running firmware version 4.4.11 or higher

✅ To verify:

  • Open the Mysa app

  • Tap your device tile

  • Ensure Auto is selected in the Mode menu

  • Go to Settings > Thermostat Preferences and confirm that Auto Mode and a deadband have been set

❗ If Auto Mode is not visible on the thermostat hardware

2. Confirm Your Heat To and Cool To Setpoints

In Auto Mode, the system only activates:

  • Heating if room temp is below the Heat To setpoint

  • Cooling if room temp is above the Cool To setpoint

  • Neither if the room temp is between the two (this is the deadband range)

✅ To check:

  • Look at the current room temperature

  • Compare it with the Heat To and Cool To setpoints in the app

  • If the current temperature is within the setpoint range + deadband, your system will not engage heating or cooling (this is normal)

💡 Tip: If you're unsure, try manually adjusting the setpoints further apart to test system behavior. Example: Set Heat To = 70°F and Cool To = 75°F.

3. Review Your Deadband Settings

The deadband is the minimum gap between Heat To and Cool To.

  • Default: 4°F (2°C)

  • Customizable: Up to 10°F (6°C)

Too-small of a gap won’t be accepted, and a larger gap may make it feel like nothing is happening.

✅ To check:

  • In the app, go to Device Settings > Thermostat Preferences

  • Confirm the deadband value

  • Make sure the setpoints follow:
Cool To ≥ Heat To + Deadband

🛠 If your Heat To is 68°F and the deadband is 4°F, your Cool To must be at least 72°F.

4. Consider Built-In System Delays

Auto Mode still follows system protection rules like:

  • Minimum Compressor Off Time (e.g., 5-minute delay between cooling cycles)

  • Cycles Per Hour (CPH) limits (e.g., 3 cycles/hour for heat pumps)

  • Temperature Differential (swing)

These protections can make the system wait, even if heating or cooling is needed.

✅ To test:

  • Wait at least 5–10 minutes after changing setpoints

  • Try manually increasing or decreasing the room temperature significantly

  • Watch for the heat or cool icon in the app or on the thermostat display

🔁 For immediate testing, temporarily set Heat To well above or Cool To well below the current room temperature.

5. Verify Fan Behavior

If the fan is running but the system is not heating or cooling:

  • The room temperature may be within the deadband

  • Or the system is in a delay (MCOT or CPH)

✅ Fan-only behavior is normal in Auto Mode

You can check fan settings under:

  • Settings > Thermostat Preferences > Fan Control

Still Having Issues?

If you’ve verified all the above and the system still isn’t behaving as expected:

  • Restart the Mysa app

  • Power cycle your HVAC system (if safe to do so)

  • Confirm your firmware version is 4.4.11 or higher

For further help, contact Mysa Support with:

  • A description of the issue

  • A screenshot of your setpoints and room temperature

  • Your firmware version (found in Device Settings > About)
