Freeze Protection Toggle
Freeze Protection Toggle
This article explains how to use the Freeze Protection toggle on your Mysa Smart Thermostat.
What Is Freeze Protection?
Freeze Protection is a safety feature that automatically activates your heating system when the room temperature drops to a dangerously low level. Its purpose is to help prevent pipes from freezing during extended cold snaps or when you're away from home.
When Freeze Protection is enabled and the ambient temperature falls below the protection threshold, the thermostat turns on heating to bring the temperature back up — even if the thermostat is set to Off or the setpoint is lower than the protection threshold.
Freeze Protection has been active on the Mysa Smart Thermostat since launch. A recent firmware update now gives you the option to toggle this feature on or off.
How to Enable or Disable Freeze Protection
- Open the Mysa app on your mobile device.
- Tap the thermostat you want to adjust.
- Tap the Settings icon (gear icon, top right).
- Scroll to Device Settings.
- Look for Freeze Protection.
- Toggle the switch On or Off.
When the toggle is On, Freeze Protection is active and your thermostat will automatically heat if temperatures drop too low. When the toggle is Off, the thermostat will not intervene at low temperatures.
Important: Freeze Protection is enabled by default. If you choose to disable it, your thermostat will no longer activate heating automatically at dangerously low temperatures.
When You Might Want to Disable Freeze Protection
There are a few situations where turning off Freeze Protection could make sense:
- Seasonal or vacation properties in warm climates – If freezing temperatures are not a concern at your location, you may not need this feature.
- Separate freeze protection already in place – If your property has a dedicated freeze protection system or heat trace cables on your pipes, the thermostat's built-in protection may be redundant.
- Winterized or drained plumbing – If you've already drained the water lines in a property that will be unoccupied during winter, there is no risk of frozen pipes.
Warning: Disabling Freeze Protection in a home with active plumbing during cold weather can put your pipes at serious risk of freezing. Frozen pipes can burst and cause significant water damage. Only disable this feature if you are confident that freezing temperatures will not be a concern or that alternative protection is in place.
When to Keep Freeze Protection Enabled
For most homes, keeping Freeze Protection enabled is the safest choice. This is especially true if:
- You live in a climate where temperatures regularly drop below freezing.
- The thermostat controls heating in a space with water pipes (kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, basements).
- You travel frequently or leave your home unoccupied for extended periods.
- Your heating system is the only protection against freezing temperatures in your home.
Tip: Even if you lower your setpoint to save energy while away, Freeze Protection acts as a safety net — it only activates if room temperature drops to a critical low, well below typical setpoints.
Troubleshooting
I don't see the Freeze Protection toggle in the app
- Make sure your Mysa Smart Thermostat firmware is up to date. The toggle requires the latest firmware version.
- Check for a firmware update by opening the Mysa app, navigating to your thermostat, and tapping Settings → Device Info.
- Ensure your Mysa app is updated to the latest version from the App Store or Google Play.
My thermostat turned on heating unexpectedly
If your thermostat activated heating when you weren't expecting it, Freeze Protection may have kicked in because the room temperature dropped to a critical level. Check the current room temperature displayed in the app. If Freeze Protection is enabled and the temperature was near the threshold, this is normal and expected behavior.
I disabled Freeze Protection but want to re-enable it
Follow the same steps under How to Enable or Disable Freeze Protection above and toggle the switch back On. Freeze Protection takes effect immediately once enabled.
