Heater Short Cycling After Installing Mysa

Last updated: October 29, 2026

After you install Mysa, your heater can turn on and off more frequently than with your old thermostat. Usually, this is correct. It is not a problem.

Why your heater turns on and off more frequently

With the Baseboard heater type, Mysa turns the heater on and off in cycles. In each cycle, Mysa changes how long the heater stays on. This keeps the room temperature near the setpoint. The length of a cycle is different for each model:

  • V1 and Gen3: 15 seconds.

  • V2: 14 minutes.

  • Lite: 12 minutes.

On V1 and Gen3, the heater can turn on and off in each 15-second cycle. This is correct for Baseboard.

When to contact support

Contact support if:

  • The room never gets to the setpoint.

  • Your energy bills are much higher than you expect for the size of your room.

If the heater stays on and does not stop, turn off the circuit breaker. Then contact support. Do not touch the wires when the power is on. Also refer to Installation & Wiring Troubleshooting.

Make sure that the heater type is correct

A heater with a fan can turn on and off incorrectly if the heater type is Baseboard. Make sure that the heater type in the Mysa app is correct for your heater.

  1. On the home screen of the Mysa app, tap your thermostat.

  2. Tap the Settings tab.

  3. Tap Thermostat Preferences.

  4. In Heater Type, select your heater type.

The heater types are:

  • Baseboard: for electric baseboard heaters, convectors and electric wall heaters without a fan.

  • Fan Forced: for heaters with a fan. On V1 and Gen3, the cycles are longer than with Baseboard. On Gen3, a cycle is 3 minutes. On V1, a cycle is 3, 4 or 6 minutes. On V2 and Lite, Mysa turns the heater on when the room is 0.5°C (1°F) below the setpoint. Mysa turns the heater off when the room temperature gets to the setpoint.

  • Radiant: for radiant ceiling heaters. Only V1 and Gen3 have Radiant. On V2 and Lite, select Fan Forced for a radiant ceiling heater.

With Radiant, Mysa turns the heater on when the room is 0.5°C (1°F) below the setpoint. On V1, Mysa turns the heater off when the room temperature gets to the setpoint. On Gen3, Mysa turns the heater off when the room is 0.5°C (1°F) above the setpoint. After the heater turns on or off, Mysa waits a minimum of 5 minutes before it changes the heater again. The room temperature changes more than with Baseboard.

For more information, refer to Selecting Your Heater Type.

Higher energy bills after installation

More cycles alone do not increase the energy that your heater uses. The energy use changes with the total time that the heater is on.

Energy bills from different months are not easy to compare. When the weather is colder, your heater uses more energy. For example, January is usually colder than December.

To decrease your energy costs:

  • Decrease your setpoint by 1 to 2°C.

  • Use an Away shortcut when you are out.

  • Set a schedule that decreases the heat at night or in rooms that you do not use.
