Selecting Your Heater Type
Selecting Your Heater Type
This guide explains the heater type modes available on Mysa for Baseboards and how to choose the right one for your heating system.
Available Heater Types
Mysa for Baseboards offers heater type modes to optimize temperature control for your specific heating system. The available modes depend on your thermostat version.
- Baseboard — Electric baseboard and convection heaters. Uses proportional control for tight temperature regulation. Available on all versions.
- Fan-forced — Fan heaters, toe kick heaters, and wall heaters with fans. Available on all versions, but cycle timing options are V1 only.
- Radiant — Radiant ceiling and panel heaters. Uses on/off control, activating 0.5°C (1°F) below the setpoint. V1 only.
Baseboard Mode
Use this mode for:
- Electric baseboard heaters
- Convection heaters
- Electric wall heaters without fans
How it works: Mysa uses proportional control to cycle your heater on and off in short intervals, maintaining a tight temperature range around your setpoint. This prevents large temperature swings and provides consistent comfort.
Fan-Forced Mode
Use this mode for:
- Fan-forced heaters
- Toe kick heaters (kick space heaters)
- Wall heaters with built-in fans
- Any heater with a motor
Fan-forced mode uses longer heating cycles than Baseboard mode to reduce wear on fan motors and prevent frequent on/off switching that can be noisy or shorten motor lifespan. The way Mysa manages these cycles depends on your thermostat version.
Fan-Forced on V1 (Legacy)
On Mysa for Baseboards V1, fan-forced mode uses duty cycle control with selectable cycle timing. You can choose how long each heating cycle lasts:
- Short — More frequent cycles, tighter temperature control
- Medium — Balanced approach (default)
- Long — Fewer cycles, best for motor longevity
Choose based on your preference for temperature consistency versus minimizing fan cycling. If your fan heater is noisy when it cycles on and off, try a longer cycle. If you want tighter temperature control, use a shorter cycle.
Fan-Forced on V2 and Lite
On Mysa for Baseboards V2 and Mysa LITE for Baseboards, fan-forced mode uses automatic proportional control. Mysa optimizes the heating cycle length automatically — there are no manual cycle timing options to select.
Note: If you have a V2 or Lite and do not see cycle timing options (Short/Medium/Long) in the app, this is expected. These options are only available on the V1 thermostat. Your V2 or Lite thermostat adjusts fan-forced heating automatically for optimal comfort and motor protection.
Radiant Mode (V1 Only)
Radiant mode is only available on Mysa for Baseboards V1. It is not available on V2 or Lite.
Use this mode for:
- Radiant ceiling heaters
- Radiant panel heaters
How it works: Mysa uses simple on/off control. The heater only turns on when the room temperature drops 0.5°C (1°F) below your setpoint, then turns off when the setpoint is reached. This works well for radiant systems that heat objects rather than air.
Note: Radiant mode may result in slightly larger temperature swings compared to proportional control modes.
Note: If you have a V2 or Lite thermostat and have a radiant heater, select Baseboard mode instead. Baseboard mode's proportional control works well with radiant heating systems.
How to Change Your Heater Type
From the Mysa app:
- From the home screen, tap your thermostat to open the device control screen
- Tap the Settings tab (bottom right)
- Tap Heater Type
- Select your heater type
- If using Fan-forced on a V1 thermostat, select your preferred cycle timing (Short, Medium, or Long)
Changes take effect immediately.
Tip: V2 and Lite users will not see a cycle timing option after selecting Fan-forced, and will not see a Radiant option. This is normal — your thermostat handles fan-forced cycle timing automatically, and Baseboard mode is recommended for radiant heaters.
Which Mode Should I Use?
Not sure what type of heater you have?
- If your heater has visible fins and no fan, use Baseboard
- If your heater has a fan (you can hear it or feel air blowing), use Fan-forced
- If your heater is mounted in the ceiling or is a flat radiant panel, use Radiant (V1 only) or Baseboard (V2 and Lite)
Tip: If you're unsure, start with Baseboard mode. You can change it anytime if temperature control isn't working as expected.
